edit- I put some vaseline on a piece of glass and put it in front of the lens. It was a bit challenging to work with. With a very respectful tip of the hat to Mr. George Hurrell, the king of golden age, glam Hollywood photography. Some gorgeous examples can be seen Here.

Some photogs also use a silk stocking or nylons over the lens for the same effect with less mess!
